Site Rules

The Mount Agamenticus Steering Committee, made up of state, local, and non-profit landowners are working together to protect and manage this area for wildlife, water quality, and sustainable recreation. As you enjoy Mount Agamenticus’ scenic vistas, fragile habitats, and distinctive trail system please follow these simple guidelines and treat the land and wildlife with respect.

Remember that this land is critical habitat to many of Maine’s rare plants and animals. Mount Agamenticus is unlike any place else on earth and its conservation depends on you.

  • Stay on marked trails.
  • Alcohol and Drugs: Consumption or use of alcoholic beverages or drugs is not allowed.
  • Camping/Campfires: Overnight camping and overnight parking is not allowed. No campfires are allowed on Mount Agamenticus due to potential and significant fire danger.  Small camp stoves or gas grills are ok. Charcoal grills are not allowed.
  • Closed Areas: Trails will be opened and closed by the Steering Committee as warranted by environmental and safety conditions. No person may enter or remain in closed areas except as authorized by the Mount A Steering Committee.
  • Drones: Operating Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS), to include drones, for commercial use is not permitted on Town of York public parks to include Mount Agamenticus. Recreational UAS operators must be familiar with and follow the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) regulations to include register any UAS over .55lbs, mark UAS on the outside with registration number, and carry proof of registration, pass the Recreational UAS Safety Test (TRUST) and carrying proof of test passage, flying only for personal enjoyment (not for monetary or non-monetary compensation), keep UAS within line of sight, must fly below 400’, and must not fly in a dangerous manner. It is further advised to follow the other guidelines listed hereinto to include not approaching, following or otherwise harassing wildlife to include bird species and being considerate of other guests who are visiting for a natural or quiet experience. Exceptions may be made for law enforcement, employees, or their representatives in the official conduct of their duties, or under rare circumstances with a Special Use Permit (see Permits).
  • Geocaching: The placement of geocaches or letterboxes may be permitted with prior written permission by the Mount A Steering Committee by calling (207) 361-1102. Cache owners are responsible for ensuring that the property is protected from abuse.
  • Group Activities: Organized groups may be permitted with prior written permission by the Mount A Steering Committee by calling (207) 361-1102 or by filling out the online Group Registration Form. Group leaders are responsible for ensuring that the property is protected from abuse by the group, that the group practices the principles of Leave No Trace and is considerate of other individual visitors.
  • Hours of Operation: The area is open during daylight hours only (from sunrise to sunset). All activities must conclude and exit at sunset.
  • Hunting and Trapping: Hunting, trapping, and fishing are allowed in accordance with the management policies of each landowner. Please refer to the landowner for specific guidelines and boundaries. See contact information below. As such, the discharging of any weapon is prohibited from or within 300 feet of any picnic area, parking area, public trail, or other developed area. Loaded weapons are not permitted on the tread way. Work areas and areas with significant public use may be temporarily posted as closed to hunting by park management in the interest of public safety. Target practicing is not allowed.
  • Metal Detectors: Metal detectors are not allowed. See Natural and Cultural Resources.
  • Motor Vehicles: The Mount Agamenticus Access Road is a public road. All vehicles are subject to license safety requirements and regulations of the Maine Department of Public Safety. Please observe slow and safe driving in entering and departing the Mount Agamenticus Access Road. Speed limit is 15 mph. PROCEED CAUTIOUSLY. Parking is allowed in designated areas only.
  • Natural and Cultural Resources: All wildlife, plant life, artifacts and any other natural or man-made features are protected and may not be disturbed or removed (unless regulated with permit). Harassment of wildlife is illegal in Maine; do not approach, follow or feed wildlife. Releasing or introducing any animal is prohibited. Please leave rocks, wildflowers, and other plants or natural objects as you find them. Do not disturb wetlands or vernal pools.
  • Noise Levels: Please be considerate of guests who are visiting Mount A for a quiet natural experience.
  • Permits: A written permit issued by the Mount Agamenticus Steering Committee is required for any special request or activity not covered by these rules and regulations. To request a permit, call the Mount Agamenticus Conservation Office at (207) 361-1102.
  • Pets: Pets are welcome at Mount A but must be leashed. Owners are responsible for properly disposing of their pet’s waste.
  • Refuse: Mount Agamenticus has a “carry in/carry out” policy. Visitors are responsible for carrying out all their refuse (including all wrappers, packaging, bottles, cans, cigarette butts, pet waste, etc.) and are encouraged to reduce, reuse, and recycle these items when possible.
  • Toilet Facilities: Portable outdoor facilities are available seasonally at the summit and year-round at the base. The main lodge facility is open and available to special function groups only and is not for public use.
  • Trail Use Designations: Observe and respect trail use designations and closures. Cars and trucks are not allowed. ATVs, dirt bikes, and snowmobiles are allowed on multiple use trails only. Please refer to the Maine Dept. of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife’s “All Terrain Vehicles Laws and Rules” publication updated annually regarding proper use, licensing, and registration.
  • Trail and Stunt Building: Stay on authorized trails. Do not cut switchbacks or create new trails. Stunt building or any other trail manipulation is prohibited. Possession of handsaws, chainsaws, loppers, shovels, rakes, or any other trail clearing or building tool or material is prohibited.
  • Recreational Users: Mount Agamenticus visitors assume all risks, and must be reasonably prepared and equipped, take reasonable precautions against endangering themselves or others and must wear appropriate footwear and clothing.
  • Vandalism: No person may deface, paint, damage, mutilate, or vandalize any natural or cultural object, or any sign or structure within the conservation area. Possession of paint or marking materials, or tampering with, altering, or removing any sign, marker, or structure, is prohibited. Driving nails or permanently installing any object is prohibited.

These rules and regulations have been promulgated for the protection of our patrons and for the facilities and natural resources of the Mount Agamenticus Conservation Region. In addition to any criminal and civil sanctions imposed by law, any person violating these rules or other laws, or regulations may be required to immediately leave, and the Mount Agamenticus Steering Committee may revoke the privilege of any person who violates these rules to enter the area for a specified period.
